Hey bloggers! In my previous blog post, I looked at some examples of film openers. Viewing these short videos, I came up with ideas of how I could create my own film opener. Here are three potential concepts for my film, along with their pros and cons.
First concept:
This story would follow a student who finds a mysterious note hidden in an old book. As they read the note, they discover it contains clues about an unsolved crime that happened years ago in the library. The opening scene could show close-up shots of dusty books, the student tracing fingerprints, and a plot twist towards the end of the film.
Pros:
- The library setting will create a moody atmosphere
- Wouldn't need many props beyond books and a handwritten note
- The mysterious atmosphere would grab the viewer's attention right away
Cons:
- Permission needed to film in the library
- Good lighting might be tricky in the library
- Will need to find the right time to film when the library is relatively empty
- Will have to make the clues interesting enough to hook viewers in
Second concept:
This concept follows someone who wakes up late for the most important meeting of their life. Everything the person does to get ready quickly turns into a disaster. For example, spilled coffee, mismatched shoes, wrinkly shirt, etc. The frantic energy would build up as the situation gets more and more chaotic.
Pros:
- Very relatable
- Can film everything at home, saving time
- Won't need many actors
Cons:
- Creating comedy might take several takes to get right
- Will have to make the mishaps look natural and not forced
- Risk of creating a feeling like "late for work" if it is not unique enough
Third concept:
This concept follows someone who loses their phone in their house and becomes increasingly desperate to find it. The camera could follow them as they retrace their steps, look in unlikely places, and discover some forgotten things along the way. It ends with the phone being in an obvious spot, and they checked multiple times.
Pros:
- Super easy to film at home
- Anyone can relate to losing their phone
- Can be creative with the camera angles to show the frustrations
- Only need 1 actor
Cons:
- Will need to make sure the search feels urgent enough to be interesting
- The pacing would be important to keep viewers engaged
- Might need to exaggerate the acting a bit to make it entertaining
