Color Use

Hey everyone! Today, I will discuss color in my short film. I will break down how I am using color to create the right mood and feeling. Color plays a huge role in making the viewers feel uneasy as the story unfolds.

At the start of the film, I'll be using warm colors from the desk lamp and phone screen. These orange and yellow tones make everything feel normal and cozy. The character's gray hoodie and dark sweatpants blend with the warm lights, creating a comfortable late-night scene.  As things start getting strange, the colors shift. The blue light from the phone becomes the main source of light. This cold blue light makes everything feel less natural and more alien. When the character looks at their phone, this blue light shows on their face, making them look almost ghostly.

Furthermore, the darkness around the character gets deeper as the story goes on. I am using the contrast between the bright screen light and the black shadows to create tension. When they look out the window, the yellow street lights will cast long shadows that make the empty street look wrong somehow.  For the ending, I am letting the phone's screen light fade from blue to nothing as the battery dies. This leaves us with just hints of gray and black, making the audience feel the same isolation as the character. As the character becomes more alone, the warm colors will start to fade away, leaving the character in a cold, blue-tinted reality.
