Sound Design

Welcome back, everyone! Let me tell you how I created all the sounds for "Lost Signal." Getting the sound right was super important as it enhances the viewing experience. One of the sounds I worked on was the phone notification sounds. I didn't want to use regular phone sounds because I wanted to make it different. I took normal notification sounds and changed them a little bit by turning down the pitch. It was cool because it was my first time doing something like this and I thought it would make the film more strange. The hardest part was making the quiet scenes feel scary. I added background sounds to make everything feel real. I went on YouTube and searched for creepy background music, and surprisingly, I found an audio from the movie "Predator" that was copyright-free.

The timing of the sounds was super tricky to get right. If a sound plays too early, it ruins the viewing experience. If it plays too late, it doesn't feel scary anymore. I spent a good chunk of time moving sounds around by a little bit. Sometimes, I'd watch the same clips repeatedly to get the right sound. I think the hardest audio I had to deal with was the part where the character speaks with his mom. I had to sync the dialogue with the phone screen overlay so that it did not look off. Although the dialogue was a little rushed, I was able to sync up the audio dialogue with the phone screen overlay. The #1 tip I could give you about picking the right sounds for your video is to listen to them with your eyes closed first. Just imagine the feeling when you listen to the audio first, and you should be able to tell if it's the right one.
