Hey everyone! Today I want to talk about how I used different camera shots to capture my short film opener. Camera angles are super important because they help viewers feel what the character is feeling. Let me walk you through some of the shots I used and why I used them.
For the opening scene, we start with a medium shot and then transition to a close-up of the phone screen. The camera is close so that the viewer can see every detail on the phone. I want the viewers to feel like they are right there, looking at the phone themselves. This shot helps show how focused the character is on their phone. When weird stuff starts happening, these close-up shots of the screen become even more important because they show every glitch and error message clearly. This helps build tension because viewers can see exactly what is freaking out the character.
Furthermore, I use wide shots to capture the dark room. These shots show how alone the main character is in their room. In one of the scenes, the character looks out their window. For this shot, I use the character's point of view so that the viewers see exactly what they see, the dark houses and empty streets. I also use medium shots to show the character's face as he reacts to everything going wrong. You can see their expression change from calm to confused to scared. One of my favorite shots is when the character runs from their room to outside. The camera follows him in a shaky way as they sprint through the scene. The unsteady camera movement makes everything feel chaotic and out of control, just like how the character is feeling in that moment.
